Where Alabama wants your Schedule 1
Alabama registers vehicles through license plate issuing offices in the county where the owner resides — or, for a company, the county where the vehicle is operated. The standard proof is the IRS-receipted Form 2290 Schedule 1 or a photocopy of it; for a vehicle registered within 60 days of purchase, the state accepts the bill of sale instead.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
E-filing can make your IRP application completely paperless
Since July 1, 2021, when Form 2290 is filed electronically through participating IRS service providers, Alabama’s Motor Vehicle Division may be able to verify the filing electronically — allowing IRP license applications to be completely paperless. Alabama is one of the states where e-filing changes the counter experience, not just the speed.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Alabama
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Alabama that is handled by ALDOR Motor Vehicle Division, Alabama Motor Carrier (AMC) System (334-242-9000). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
