Where Connecticut wants your Schedule 1
Connecticut states that for vehicles registered at 55,000 pounds and over you must file and pay the federal highway use tax by filing Form 2290, and that when you renew your registration you must submit proof of that payment โ a copy of the Form 2290 receipted by the IRS listing the vehicle identification number. If the purchase date is more than 60 days from registration, bring the 2290 to register.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Connecticut charges its own per-mile Highway Use Fee
Separate from the federal HVUT, Connecticut levies a Highway Use Fee administered by the Department of Revenue Services on vehicles at a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more in FHWA classes 8 through 13. Carriers register through myconneCT and file quarterly, at rates running from 2.5 cents per mile at the bottom of the scale to 17.5 cents per mile above 80,000 pounds.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Connecticut
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Connecticut that is handled by Connecticut DMV International Registration Plan. Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal โ an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
