Where Idaho wants your Schedule 1
Idaho states that on vehicles with 55,000 pounds or more combined gross weight, proof of filing the HVUT for the current tax period must accompany the registration application. It accepts a photocopy of the Schedule 1 listing the complete VIN and showing the IRS receipt stamp or e-file watermark, or a dated bill of sale if the truck was purchased within 60 days.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Idaho publishes an actual grace window
Most states leave the July changeover ambiguous. Idaho spells it out: between July 1 and September 30, proof for the current or the prior tax year is accepted — after September 30, the current tax year HVUT is required. Idaho also splits registration by threshold, with Commercial Vehicle Services handling commercial power units over 8,000 pounds and farm units over 60,000, and county assessors handling everything below.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Idaho
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Idaho that is handled by ITD DMV Commercial Vehicle Services, Commercial Registration System ((208) 872-3163). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
