Where Indiana wants your Schedule 1

The Indiana BMV requires Form 2290 during registration, amendment and renewal transactions for vehicles with a declared gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more β€” commercial and farm trucks, commercial and farm semi-tractors, and for-hire buses. Farm trucks and semi-tractors at that weight must submit it at registration and again on every renewal.

Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.

An excise tax that replaces personal property tax

Indiana levies a Commercial Vehicle Excise Tax paid at the time of registration in lieu of personal property tax β€” commercial vehicles and trailers subject to it are no longer subject to personal property taxation. Plate weight is set by declared gross vehicle weight: empty weight plus the heaviest load you will carry during the registration year. New IRP and IFTA accounts require an appointment.

Apportioned (IRP) registration in Indiana

If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Indiana that is handled by Indiana DOR Motor Carrier Services Division (317-615-7200, option 2). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal β€” an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
