Where Iowa wants your Schedule 1
Iowa law requires you to title and register with a county treasurer’s office, while apportioned registration runs through Iowa DOT Motor Carrier Services. The DOT asks for a copy of IRS Form 2290 for each power unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 54,999 pounds, noting other acceptable proof of payment may substitute.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Iowa talks in tons, and cannot replace your Schedule 1
Iowa registers trucks by tonnage class rather than plain weight brackets, which is why Iowa truckers say "28 ton" for the same 55,000 pounds that triggers the federal filing. Iowa DOT is also explicit that it cannot supply a replacement copy of your Form 2290 — lose it and you go to the IRS at 866-699-4096, which is a good argument for keeping the e-filed PDF somewhere you can find it.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Iowa
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Iowa that is handled by Iowa DOT Motor Carrier Services, IRP Online (515-237-3268). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
