Where Kansas wants your Schedule 1
Kansas requires proof of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax filing with the IRS — Form 2290, Schedule 1 — as part of apportioned registration, and county treasurers list it among the documents needed for new accounts, fleet renewals and adding a vehicle. The federal filing duty itself attaches at 55,000 pounds taxable gross weight.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Two counters, and you need to know which is yours
Kansas runs parallel tracks: ordinary vehicles register at any of the 105 county treasurers, while commercial motor vehicles go through the state’s Commercial Motor Vehicle Office using the KCoVRS system, registering for intrastate or interstate motor carrier cards depending on where you run. Oversize and overweight permits are separate again, through K-TRIPS.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Kansas
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Kansas that is handled by KDOR Commercial Motor Vehicle Office, via KCoVRS (785-296-3621). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
