Where Michigan wants your Schedule 1
A validated IRS Form 2290 Schedule 1 is required for Michigan IRP registration — and the weight trigger is the federal one, since Michigan does not publish its own figure. If the validated Schedule 1 has not arrived yet, Michigan accepts a photocopy of both sides of the IRS-validated check, an IRS cash receipt (Form 809), or an EFTPS payment confirmation. Registering within 60 days of purchase, no proof is required at the IRP office.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
The heaviest legal trucks in the country run here
Michigan’s truck-weight law permits gross weights up to 164,000 pounds across a combination of up to 11 axles — far above the 80,000-pound federal interstate limit, and the reason Michigan truck configurations differ from every neighboring state. IRP plates and cab cards are issued only through the Lansing IRP office, not at branch offices.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Michigan
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Michigan that is handled by Michigan Department of State IRP Unit, Lansing (517-335-6119). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
