Where Mississippi wants your Schedule 1
Mississippi divides registration by where you run: intrastate trucks over 10,000 pounds register at the local county tax collector, while interstate trucks over 10,000 pounds go to a Department of Revenue district office. The federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax applies at 55,000 pounds taxable gross weight, evidenced by the IRS-receipted Schedule 1.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
The dividing line is 10,000 pounds, not 26,000
Mississippi sets its intrastate-versus-interstate counter split unusually low, at 10,000 pounds GVW — well below the thresholds most states use — with district offices in Biloxi, Clinton, Hattiesburg, Hernando and Meridian handling the interstate side. The state’s motor vehicle ad valorem tax also stops at 10,000 pounds, so heavier commercial trucks fall outside it.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in Mississippi
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In Mississippi that is handled by MDOR Motor Vehicle Licensing Bureau ((601) 923-7100). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal — an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
