Where New Jersey wants your Schedule 1
The MVC states that heavy-use commercial vehicles registered at 55,000 pounds or more must upload the Heavy Use Tax Form 2290 for online renewal. It applies across the commercial registration codes β truck/tractor, aggregate haulers, heavy-duty tow, solid waste and constructor.
Whichever counter you end up at, the document is the same: the Schedule 1 the IRS returns after processing your Form 2290, either manually stamped or carrying the e-file watermark. E-filing returns it within minutes, which matters when registration or a plate renewal is waiting on it.
Lettering rules you can be stopped for
New Jersey requires commercial vehicles to display the owner name and municipality β and, when GVWR is 26,001 pounds or more, the GVWR itself β in letters at least three inches high. The MVC also notes plainly that IRP registration does not waive or exempt the federal Form 2290.
Apportioned (IRP) registration in New Jersey
If you run in two or more jurisdictions, you register through the International Registration Plan rather than as a purely intrastate vehicle. In New Jersey that is handled by MVC Motor Carrier Services, IRP Section (mCarrier online) ((609) 633-9400 ext. 2). Proof of HVUT payment is part of the IRP application and renewal β an apportioned account cannot add a taxable vehicle whose Form 2290 is unpaid.
